Welcome#

LS GROUP (formerly Light And Shadows) thanks you for your interest in its ErgoCapt software and welcomes you to this online documentation.

We are attentive to your comments and regularly improve the information made available to you. Don't hesitate to send us your suggestions.

The actors#

ErgoCapt was developed for Healt & Safety L'Oréal by LS GROUP - Immersive Experience Architects, in partnership with the ergonomics consultancy Val.id, publisher of the Ergoéval software. ErgoCapt uses the same pictogram-based rating grid as Ergoéval. ErgoCapt is one of the tools made available to L'Oréal under the Ergonomic Attitude programme here set up by Healt & Safety L'Oréal.

Organisation of ErgoCapt online help#

Several sections are available in the ErgoCapt online documentation to guide you through the various phases of use: initial installation of the software, getting started quickly, step-by-step instructions for the main stages, vocabulary and concepts, etc.

In particular, you'll find :

The Getting Started manual for in situ evaluation.
The User's Guide for a step-by-step guide through the main stages.
The Reference Guide to find out more about the equipment and functions of each workshop.
The Installation Guide is intended for IT staff in your IT department, in case reinstallation is necessary. You will not need this section for everyday use.

You'll find additional information, such as frequently asked questions or FAQ with precise answers, a Glossary to find out more about the vocabulary used and the concepts covered, an About to keep track of updates to this documentation, and a Further reading page with links to external documentary sources.

Introduction#

ErgoCapt is motion capture software designed to assess a person's work sequences by identifying the attitudes and postures that can lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

There are two main uses for ErgoCapt:

  • An ergonomic assessment in situ directly in the workplace.
  • A [virtual] visit (#evaluation_en_realite_virtuelle) to a digital project, with or without an ergonomic assessment.

Each use case requires specific equipment, supplied with ErgoCapt.

Use cases#

In situ ergonomic assessment#

The "In situ " method involves assessing the ergonomics of an existing workstation by equipping an operator with movement sensors and recording the various tasks he or she usually performs. Supervised by the ergonomics consultant, an immediate self-confrontation debriefing makes the operator aware of the gestures he is making and facilitates discussion on what can be improved.

Project review in virtual reality#

A virtual reality project review -- here called "VR Review " -- consists of exploring a 3-dimensional digital model of a piece of equipment being designed. Equipped with a virtual reality headset and joysticks, visitors walk through the 1:1 scale digital model. As they move around the project, they can interact with objects or run pre-prepared scenarios. In this way, they can identify improvements to be made to future equipment.

Ergonomic evaluation in virtual reality#

During this VR project review, the visitor can simulate future tasks. By adding motion sensors (body and hands) to the equipment, the ergonomist can record the visitor's movements and carry out an ergonomic evaluation -- here called "VR Evaluation " -- of the virtual workstation.

Whatever the use case, the use of ErgoCapt can be broken down into 4 main phases.

The Users#

  • During an ErgoCapt session, we will distinguish between several characters:

    • The Supervisor is generally the site's ergonomics referent. He or she has been trained in the use of ErgoCapt and knows how to use the hardware and software used for an ErgoCapt session. They are also experienced users of Val.id's Ergoéval software and method.
    • A User (or Operator).

The 4 main stages of an ErgoCapt session#

An ergonomic assessment session with ErgoCapt is divided into 4 main phases: setting up the equipment, preparing the session, capturing body movements and the analysis phase.

Stage 1: Setting up#

During the equipment set-up phase, you will have to choose the type of study to be carried out (in situ, VR review or VR evaluation) and set up the corresponding motion tracking systems (Neuron, Manus, VR headset, etc.). The person taking part in the study will be equipped with the necessary material, with the help of the supervisor.

Stage 2: Preparation#

During the Preparation stage, a Player is selected. It corresponds to the motion capture hardware used. *For further information, see Player in the glossary.
In the case of a virtual reality (VR) session, a scene containing the 3D model of the project is added to serve as a set.

Stage 3: Capture#

During the Capture stage, the movements of the sensors are measured by the system. The data is transmitted in real time to the ErgoCapt software so that the Player can reproduce the movements as faithfully as possible. The ErgoCapt software evaluates the postures in real time and displays the constraints experienced in the form of colours. It is also during this stage that the user makes the recordings.

Stage 4: Analyse#

During the Analysis stage, the recording is replayed as many times as necessary. You can divide the sequence into "tasks" and create "activities" when a posture needs to be evaluated. A summary table calculates the overall score and allows you to export an illustrated report or an exchange file to ErgoEval.
